The big Maple Leaf Festival weekend is over in Baldwin City, Kansas… whew!  I really love Maple Leaf, but it really is tiring and makes me feel like I didn’t have much of a weekend at all.  Over the years, we have become known for our elaborate Halloween display and it takes a lot to get it set up. And of course, once we get it set up, we feel compelled to greet the visitors in our yard, answer questions, etc.

A new addition to our weekend this year, Emery and I did the Maple Leaf Run 5K. Let’s get this straight: I am not a morning person. Waking up early and running in the cold really isn’t my idea of a good time. But, we sucked it up and headed out to the Baldwin City Golf Course to join a mob of people who do, oddly enough, like waking up early and running in the cold. (Freaks, I tell ya!)

I guess I hadn’t really thought out what a run on a golf course would be like. All my running to date has been on streets and sidewalks.  The golf course was muddy and hilly.  Somewhere in mile 2 I was going uphill and my foot slid out from under me, re-injuring my left knee. (I had previously tweaked my knee bowling street-fighting… yeah, street-fighting. With ninjas).  I ended up walking back to the clubhouse and eating an orange. Not such a triumphant finish.  Emery, however, did have a good run and came in second in the Men’s Under 19 division.  (Go, Emery!)

Coming soon, a post on our sweet Halloween decorations…
